Picks up the series 274 years after TFoH. Follows the exploits of Raul Endymion, who becomes the protector of Aenea, daughter of Brawne Lamia (one of the 7 pilgrims in Hyperion) and the Keats AI. Upon emerging from the Time Tombs, Aenea and Raul embark on a tour of old Hegemony planets, while the Vatican directs Father Captain de Soya to pursue them in an advanced Archangel-class vessel, which uses a particularly ingenious method of achieving high speeds. The episodic nature of the novel, coupled with the fact that many of the adventures occur while on a raft accompanied by A. Bettik, an android designed for servitude, evokes the imagery of Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
