Aldersley and Wardour are rivals for Clara's hand and she chooses Aldersley. Both men embark on an expedition to find the Northwest Passage. The expedition is stranded, Wardour and Aldersley are among a party who set off to seek help, and Wardour wrestles with the temptation to abandon Aldersley in the ice. Meanwhile Clara has had a second-sight vision that Aldersley is in danger and has sailed to Newfoundland to search for him.
