While on their quest, Roland the gunslinger and his companions must take shelter from a "starkblast", an incredibly powerful, destructive, and deadly arctic hurricane, and Roland relates the tale of how, as a youth, he was sent to a distant town to capture a shapeshifter which was slaughtering the residents; in the course of that tale, the young Roland tells to the young son of one of the victims the legend of how a young man braved another starkblast among other adventures, in order to catch the murderer of his father.
In addition to its stand-alone volume, this title was published in the follow book. It can be rated independently of any volume containing it.
