Book Notes

Synopsis

From the front flap of the Gregg Press edition: "The Scothian warlords are on the rampage! The Merseians, those cold, implacable foes, are advancing! Earth is decadent, her rulers lazy, her proud warfleets scattered, her colonies defenseless! Here is a collection of three short stories and a novelette - swashbuckling, breathtaking adventures among the stars, in the future yet to come. In them Sir Dominic Flandry, captain in Earth's Imperial Naval Intelligence Corps, must scheme and fight his way through a clutch of enemies, human and non-human. Sir Dominic is no grim and humorless professional hero. He can crack a joke, hoist a bottle, or kiss a girl with the best of them. But he sees the powerful, nonhuman Merseian Empire trying to end the uneasy peace with mankind by sweeping mankind aside; and he sees corruption and cowardice at home. If the Long Night is not to come in his own lifetime and if the things he cares about are to be saved, he must do what he can. He may feel a bit melancholy about it all once in a while, but he almost invariably enjoys his work."
